What is E-learning?

'E-learning' is an umbrella term that describes learning done entirely through electronic hardware, software, or both, giving us the opportunity to learn almost anytime, anywhere. Most learning professional have defined e-leaning as the use of internet technologies to deliver a broad array of solutions that enhance knowledge and performance.

Combining the different individual definitions of e-learning, we define e-learning "as a broad combination of processes, content, and infrastructure to use computers and networks to scale and improve several significant parts of a learning value chain, including management and delivery."

Originally aimed at lowering management cost while increasing accessibility and for measurability of employees, e-learning is increasingly being used to include advanced learning techniques such as simulations and communities of practice and to include customers and vendors as well.

E-learning can be delivered via different platforms and applications which include Web-based learning, computer-based learning, virtual education opportunities and digital collaboration. Content is delivered via the Internet, intranet/extranet, mobile phones, Ipads, Ipods, audio or video tape, satellite TV, and CD-ROM. It can be self-paced or instructor-led and includes media in the form of text, image, animation, streaming video and audio.

Abbreviations like CBT (Computer-Based Training), IBT (Internet-Based Training) or WBT (Web-Based Training) have been used as synonyms to e-learning.
